TEXT KAISERIN HORS-SERIE
#03 "In an ejaculatory spurt of creativity, a bunch of freaks fuelled by a heady mix of acid, desire and the sheer delight of being, sought to invent and re-invent themselves, to express, to create, and to fuck. Their motivation was a lust to push things forward. San Fransisco was at the apex of sexual revolution, and the bunch of freaks were called the Cockettes. In the course of the few brief years of their existence, they left an indelible mark on the art world, and on the homosexual condition forever more. With the lines that separate living and performance erased, the hippy commune they shared was the site of an inferno of gender and sexual identities, where behavioural codes imposed by the social order were ripped to a thousand shreds of feather and fur, and bearded, besequinned creatures, as talented as they were trashed, performed delirious drag shows. All of this really happened and can happen again. This is our tribute, our celebration, and our demonstration that a group of people can change the world, and have a fucking good time doing it. The world of today is devoid of the vitality, which drove the Cockettes. We have no heroes, we have no utopia, we swim in a morass of cynicism, and nobody wants to re-invent our torpid societies. Heroes are born in times of change, where people are free to experiment, imagine and find alternatives. That said, the biggest changes come from behind the scenes, they creep quietly through the backdoor, so as not to frighten the masses, the hippies or the faggots. The revolution will be happy or will never be!" | The Bearded Lady |
